In Kaikōura, the mountains sit close behind the coast. You can spend the morning looking for whales offshore or follow the peninsula on foot for views back towards the ranges. If you’re driving north from Christchurch, it’s worth deciding before you set off whether you have time for a boat trip or would prefer a walk and lunch by the water.
Quick take: Stay a night if you want a wildlife trip on a northbound SH1 route. Two nights give you more flexibility if the sea is rough. If you’re just passing through, choose a waterfront meal and a short walk instead of booking a sailing tight against your drive.

Choose a wildlife outing
Whale Watch Kaikōura is the obvious starting point for a whale-focused boat trip. Compare departure and check-in times, minimum ages, cancellation policy and how your group handles swell. A dolphin-focused trip is a different experience; check whether you are booking viewing or an in-water option. Give wildlife room and let the operator manage encounters. Kaikōura is home to Ngāti Kurī of Ngāi Tahu; the coastline has a long history of Māori settlement and food gathering as well as later shore whaling. Peninsula history and sites
If the boat is cancelled
Use the DOC peninsula route for Point Kean or a short clifftop out-and-back. The signed upper route is the simpler choice when you don’t want to plan around shore conditions. Allow time for the climb, keep children away from cliff edges and read DOC alerts. Council lists toilets at Point Kean and South Bay. Keep at least 20 metres from seals, leave them a clear route to the water and follow site signs. A town waterfront stroll or museum is an easier option if conditions are poor.
Where to stay and eat
Kaikōura TOP 10 suits campers and families comparing cabins. Kaikōura Waterfront Apartments is an apartment option if you want kitchen space and the waterfront nearby. Look around West End for an easy lunch or takeaway, or try The Pier Hotel for a sit-down meal near the peninsula. Check current opening hours before counting on a particular seafood stop.
One night: Arrive with daylight for Point Kean, stay in town, then book the next morning’s wildlife trip with a buffer before your onward drive. Check NZTA for SH1 works or closures. See the Canterbury guide.
