Canterbury is easy to think of as the place you fly into before a South Island road trip. Give it a few days and you can spend a morning beside the Avon in Christchurch, a day around Akaroa Harbour, or an evening by Lake Tekapo as the hills go dark. Kaikōura takes you in the other direction, with the mountains close behind the coast. This guide helps you choose which way to go and where to spend the night.
Quick take: Stay in Christchurch if you want a car-free first day or an Akaroa day trip. Go north to Kaikōura if you’re continuing towards Marlborough. Go south through Tekapo and Twizel if you’re heading towards Wānaka or Queenstown. Combining the two directions in a short loop means backtracking through Canterbury.
Waitaha / Canterbury stretches from the Pacific coast across the plains to the Southern Alps. On Banks Peninsula, steep roads lead down to sheltered harbours. In the Mackenzie Country, open country, glacial lakes and cold nights make for a very different trip. Ngāi Tahu histories connect these places, from coastal settlements and food-gathering areas to inland routes. Ngāi Tahu cultural mapping is a useful introduction to the places and names you’ll encounter.

Choose your destination

Where to stay
Christchurch: Stay central for gardens, museums and eating out on foot. Use the airport accommodation options for a late landing or early departure. LyLo offers a lower-cost option and Sudima is closer to the terminal.
Akaroa and Kaikōura: Compare holiday park cabins and sites with harbour or waterfront motels. Walkability matters more than a sea view if you’re leaving early for a cruise. See the destination guides for specific bases.
Mackenzie Country: Tekapo suits a lakefront evening or a booked observatory trip. Twizel works well for supplies and a separate Aoraki day. Choose accommodation with a kitchen if arriving late, and check heating and parking in winter.
Short walks and easy outings
| Outing | What to allow |
|---|---|
| Botanic Gardens River Walk | Flexible garden stroll |
| Akaroa waterfront | Short village outing near the wharf |
| Point Kean | Short lookout visit or a longer clifftop walk |
| Tekapo lakefront | Short turnaround; check wind and parking |
Three days: Christchurch return
Start and finish in Christchurch, with two city nights. Day 1: Arrive and explore the central city on foot. Day 2: Drive to Akaroa and back, about 90 minutes each way before stops. Keep the morning or afternoon free for a harbour trip. Day 3: Visit the gardens or an indoor attraction, then head to the airport. Allow extra time for rental return and airport traffic.
Four days: Christchurch to Kaikōura and back
Day 1: Arrive and stay in Christchurch. Day 2: Drive north on SH1 to Kaikōura, allow roughly 2½–3 hours before stops, and stay two nights. Day 3: Use the morning for a wildlife trip or the peninsula. The two-night stay gives you room to swap plans if weather affects sailings. Day 4: Return to Christchurch, allowing another 2½–3 hours plus a buffer. If continuing to Picton, treat that as a separate onward leg.
Five days: Christchurch to Wānaka via Mackenzie
Day 1: Start in Christchurch and stay central. Day 2: Drive to Tekapo via the inland route, allowing roughly three hours plus stops, and stay by the lake. Day 3: Move to Twizel, about 45 minutes, with time for the lakes. Stay two nights. Day 4: Make Aoraki a separate out-and-back, about 45 minutes each way from Twizel before stops. Day 5: Continue over Lindis Pass to Wānaka, allowing roughly 2½ hours plus stops and weather delays. Finish in Wānaka; add a separate leg if flying from Queenstown. Mackenzie regional driving guide
Hanmer Springs and Arthur’s Pass
Hanmer Springs works as a separate inland overnight north of Christchurch, particularly if you want a soak and a short forest outing. Check Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools for admission and session details. Arthur’s Pass works best as a westbound stop or a dedicated mountain day. Check DOC’s Arthur’s Pass information before choosing a walk, especially after rain or snow.
Roads, weather and the next leg
Drive times are planning estimates. Check NZTA Journey Planner before departure, especially for SH1 coastal works, the hill road to Akaroa and winter travel on SH8 or SH73. Free waterfront and garden walks can balance paid cruises, pools and stargazing. For the national park, use our Aoraki / Mount Cook guide. For longer routes see the 7-day South Island road trip or 14-day campervan loop. If you’re comparing vehicles, start with our campervan hire guide or use the free personalised itinerary service.
